Project Overview

The proposed project involves the refurbishment and renovation of existing facilities at Kongowea Primary School, including the careful removal, handling, transportation, and safe disposal of asbestos-containing roofing materials. The objective is to restore and upgrade the school's infrastructure while eliminating health and environmental risks associated with deteriorated asbestos roofing, thereby providing a safe, functional, and conducive learning environment for pupils, teachers, and staff.

The refurbishment works include repairs to walls, floors, ceilings, doors and windows, replacement of damaged building components, internal and external plastering where necessary, painting, repair and upgrading of electrical and plumbing installations, drainage improvements, replacement of defective fittings and fixtures, roofing replacement following asbestos removal, and all associated finishing and external works.

The asbestos removal component will involve site assessment, preparation of controlled work areas, installation of safety barriers and warning signage, provision and use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), controlled removal of asbestos roofing sheets, safe packaging and labeling of asbestos waste, transportation by licensed personnel, disposal at an approved hazardous waste disposal facility, decontamination of the work area, site cleaning, and issuance of waste disposal documentation where applicable.

The refurbishment and asbestos removal works will be carried out with minimal disruption to the school's operations and in strict compliance with the approved specifications, Ministry of Education standards, National Construction Authority (NCA) regulations, the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) requirements, and all other applicable Kenyan building, environmental, and occupational health regulations.

Upon completion, the project will provide refurbished, asbestos-free school facilities that are safe, durable, environmentally compliant, and supportive of quality teaching and learning.
